Tin Pot Society - Billy Bonkers Flower Show

Emerging primarily from jams, the songs on Billy Bonkers Flower Show hold the irreplaceable charm of a debut. The straight-up, succinct arrangements and classic garage tones are holding onto an edge that teeters toward punk, whilst retaining an organic warmth. This glows most effortlessly from Jakob’s vocals and lyricism, which feel conversational, intriguing, reflective, and even comedic at times. On ‘Saccharine’, the EP’s most luminous cut, he jumps nonchalantly between the external and internal with spontaneity “A cicada coming out of the shell, I wanted to transform as well”. There’s also a striving throughout “I want my thoughts to be translucent and clear / I want thinking with no fear”, that feels recognisable yet sharp, composed and collected.

The second side of the cassette cranks the heat up a notch, with snarl and grit sounding like the band’s been let off the leash. Captured on reel-to-reel 8 track tape at Stable Sound with Will Hooper in 2024, the EP has a delightful fly-on-the-wall quality in the closeness and presence of the band’s sound in the room together. Recorded in a couple days and mixed shortly afterward, you can hear the candid approach shine through with purity and sincerity. Now seeing the light of day two years later with a release on local label Rockton Records, it’s time to stop and smell the flowers.
