Created by Josh Chan aka asian milhouse (Tash Sultana, Demon Days, thegenuinechan, Miraud) during a rollercoaster period grappling with gender, identity, isolation, and turbulent relationships, ‘innards out’ represents a significant chapter in both their musical and personal story.
The complexity and blurriness of their life between 2017-2021 is captured by the album’s diversity of musical styles; stepping seamlessly from beat music to pop electronica to more drawn out and abstract cuts.
But a common thread of Josh’s characteristic beautiful harmonic and melodic choices tie the 12 tracks together, often grounded in their keys-playing and jazz roots which border on the virtuosic.
To simplify ‘innards out’ to the beat realm does Josh’s newfound vocal confidence and technical ability a huge disservice; Josh has found their voice, and there’s a lot they can do with it.
Josh has crafted an album of intricate moments that push and pull on each other in synchronicity, remaining just as connected when they are calm and meditative as when more playful and vibrant.
Despite writing, recording, and producing the majority of the album entirely themselves, ‘innards out’ also features collaborators Marley Donnan-Cook on bass (on Ah Well), Kye Murray on drums (on Odyssey), Will Britto on synth (on All Cats Have 9 Legs),Christian Zappia on electric guitar (on Odyssey), and vocals by Eloise Gougoux (on Printemps).
Comparisons can be reductive, but you could try connecting the dots to Flying Lotus, Brian Wilson, Haroumi Hosono, and Salami Rose Joe Louis.
“I was really bored with beat music a lot of the time, so I went the opposite way and tried to write music that doesn’t go back to where it came from. And that’s really hard! But so rewarding. That also came from this being my first album singing.”

Bio & Links
Josh Chan created the asian milhouse moniker to have a new avenue more suited to their recent musical style that has emerged since 2020.
It’s one of many facets of Josh’s creative output, which includes playing keys with Tash Sultana, a core of the on-hiatus Demon Days, one half of Miraud, their instrumental beat project thegenuinechan, and session songwriting, performing, and producing for the likes of Your Girl Pho, Hector Morlet, Dogwalker, and GoofTroop.
asian milhouse is based in Boorloo/Perth.
“I think you can hear my love of video game music, I have such strong memories of songs from games and used to play sooo much…games like Pokemon and Terraria. I like how you after a while you don’t even know you’re listening to it but you know all the songs so well.”
